Eartha Kitt. This actress, singer, cabaret star, dancer, stand-up comedienne, activist and voice artist was born back on January 17, 1927 and passed away on December 25, 2008. I think it is rather ironic Eartha Mae Kitt passed away on Christmas when you consider her 1953 hit “Santa Baby” remains an enduring Christmas classic to this day. The song is a tongue-in-cheek reading of a young lady’s extravagant Christmas list to Santa Claus. The tune was Kitt’s highest charting song on the Billboard charts, peaking at #4.
Eartha Kitt was awarded during her career with a couple of Daytime Emmys, won two Annie Awards, received a Tony nomination for her role in “Timbuktu!” and had four Top Twenty hits on the U.S. Billboard Charts. “Santa Baby” has been covered by many artists over the years but in this listener’s opinion nothing touches the original Eartha Kitt did with Henri René and his orchestra. Check it out.
