Good morning everyone,
I came across a very cool website today by the name of Sounds Better with Reverb. Creation Records, one of my all-time favorite record labels that released records from bands such as Sugar, Swervedriver, The House of Love, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Adorable and Teenage Fanclub, has a great Facebook page even though the label dissolved back in 1999. Oh yeah, the label also happened to release work from Oasis and My Bloody Valentine if you need more proof of what a valid and essential record label Creation was.
The Creation FB page shared a post from Sounds Better with Reverb entitled “100 Greatest Shoegaze Albums“. I love lists, especially music related ones because of the myriad of possibilities for debate. The #3 and #31 picks on this list were from another great Creation artist by the name of Ride. The band formed in Oxford, England back in 1988 and was a vital part of the British shoegaze scene of the late eighties and early nineties. I loved the dual guitar and vocalist work from Andy Bell and Mark Gardener. The guitars had that brilliant shimmer that I look for in a great shoegaze band and the songs were loaded with pop hooks galore.
I always felt that Ride was severely overlooked here in the States compared to other bands from the shoegaze and dream pop genres. Too bad because I think their sound transcended that genre and allowed the band to remain relevant years after breaking up in 1996. Check out this great live track from the 1992 Reading Festival, “Mousetrap” from the Going Blank Again album. I can remember seeing this clip on an old video show by the name of “In Concert” (I think that was it) hosted by a very young Ben Stiller and Janeane Garofalo!
