I was a little stunned to learn earlier this year that not only was The Ocean Blue still around but the band’s sixth studio album Ultramarine was to be released in March. It’s no secret that I am a big fan of that classic eighties alternative pop sound The Ocean Blue created that led to the obvious comparisons to The Smiths, Echo and the Bunnymen and New Order. I had one chance to see them live, opening for The Psychedelic Furs at Club Rio many years ago when they were touring in support of their sophomore release Cerulean.
The Ocean Blue did a wonderful job of creating soaring, majestic music featuring guitars that gently cascaded into your senses. Later today I am stopping by Stinkweeds to finally grab a copy of the new album. It has been tough but I have made a point of refraining from checking out the new material online before I have the actual disc in my hands. My understanding is this album is a return to the band’s early work from 1989 when they released their self-titled debut and two years later with the release of Cerulean. Looking forward to seeing if that is the case!
Here is the lead track from the band’s debut The Ocean Blue, a gorgeous track entitled “Between Something and Nothing”. If the new material is even half as good as this it will be spectacular. Enjoy.
