Both reasons are all you need, but let us talk about reason #2. I have been fortunate enough to have a copy of this album for some time now and I will be honest, I have given this album a very intense and focused listen. Why? I am tired of people telling me that I love this band so much because I am friends with the three gentlemen in the band, particularly that sexy drummer Robert Lerma.
If you do not understand by now that music is incredibly important to me you should not be wasting your time reading this blog. Hell, the title tag clearly states “Come Share My Passion for Music“. I would never cheapen my love of this art form just because I happen to know someone who plays in a band.
That being said, All About Everything builds on the momentum set forth with the band’s excellent 2011 debut Lesson Number 1. The Father Figures have not completely left behind the post punk style they originally crafted but the trio of Tom Reardon on lead vocals and bass, Michael Cornelius on guitar and backing vocals and Bobby Lerma on drums and backing vocals have jelled in such a dramatic fashion that they have been able to create a unique style of music that meshes together genres such as post punk, punk rock, surf, indie rock … heck, there is so much going on during this twelve song offering that you cannot pigeonhole this band. And that is the point my friends, The Father Figures have no need to fit into any one style of music because they can do it all, and better than many of their colleagues in today’s world of rock music.
All About Everything gets off to a stunning beginning with the truly epic “Maid in China”. Good God, that opening guitar lick from Cornelius, the booming drums from Lerma and Reardon’s killer bass line set the tone for this 3:10 excursion into pure old school post punk ecstasy. Once Tom begins belting out his vocals with pure aggression this track quickly develops into what may be the most intense track this trio has created to date, a very strong statement considering the catalog of great music this band has created in a short 3 1/2 years. Whether intentional or not the guitar fury brings to mind the classic sounds of The Jam for this writer.
We have only begun folks. There is not a single weak track on the disc. Heck, there is not even an average song for that matter, but here are a few personal highlights.
The title track “All About Everything” commences with a ripping drum lick that quickly transitions into another stellar instrumental from The Father Figures. Not many bands can consistently pull off including instrumental pieces as part of their repertoire; Agent Orange comes to mind. The Father Figures deliver once again, another chance to showcase their incredible talent as pure musicians and allow the listener an opportunity to focus on what each member brings to the table.
Any song that makes reference to a “dog-eared copy of Catcher in the Rye” is ultra cool. “Crosstown” does that and much more with its frenetic bass line and vicious guitar riffs. Spectacular stuff my friends.
The opening guitar line of “Fleecing the Peace” reminds me of “Hollow Man” from The Cult, at a much revved up rate of course. Great harmonies during the vocals on the track with the chorus of “we all fall down, and get back up”; I love when the whole band gets in the act and sings as one unit. The work from Cornelius on the guitar late in this track is some of the best work I have heard from this guy.
“Over Under” is a vicious piece of work featuring drums that pummel the senses from the very first instant and continue throughout the track. I have no problem stating that no one in the Valley touches Lerma on the skins and yes, I can state that in a completely objective manner. While in no way is this a punk rock song it possesses every bit of power that a classic hardcore song features.
I am still debating whether “Maid in China” or “Tin Soldiers” is my favorite song on this disc. “Tin Soldiers” is unbelievable, a song packed with the type of fury and energy that one would expect from three veterans of the Valley’s punk rock scene. The song shreds from the opening with a furious guitar line and drum fill that stays intact all the way to the abrupt end. Reardon is a monster on the mike during “Tin Soldiers” and that bass line he creates is absolutely dynamite. What an awesome track!
If you are a fan of Fugazi or Saccharine Trust you will love this album. If you are a fan of post punk chock full of pop hooks galore you will love this album. If you are a fan of old school punk rock that does not come close to fitting the generic, sometimes even tired quality of that genre you will love this album. And it is not just me. Melissa Fossum from the New Times wrote two OUTSTANDING articles this week about The Father Figures; The Father Figures Dish on Phoenix’s Punk Rock Glory Days and The Father Figures Play Punk With No Rules. Ed Masley puts me to shame with his piece entitled Father Figures live up to promise on ‘All About Everything’.
Folks, this disc is an early frontrunner for Album of the Year in my humble opinion. That is pretty impressive when you consider The Joy Formidable, Bad Religion, The Foals and who knows, maybe My Bloody Valentine all have albums due out this year! Get your ass to the show tonight, get there early so you can check out The Smoke Bombs debut show and the last show of The Vellum, then prepare to be blown away when The Father Figures perform.
