The Tfronky Pick of the Week – Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)

U2 covering "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)"

Hello everybody,

A few days late with this week’s Christmas pick … sorry? At a time when U2 first started to own the world with the 1987 release of their fifth album The Joshua Tree they recorded a cover of a rock and roll Christmas classic “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)” during a July 1987 stop on the world tour for that album. The song was originally sung by Darlene Love and included on the 1963 Christmas compilation album A Christmas Gift for You.

This is a great tune and the video shows the band in a fun mood. The Unforgettable Fire is still my favorite album from the band but let’s face it, The Joshua Tree is probably still U2’s watershed album and was the moment when Bono became the messiah. 😉 It is pretty cool that the band decided to cover this song for the first A Very Special Christmas album at this time of its career.

Now for the band’s first single released that same year from The Joshua Tree. I still remember racing home after school to catch the world premiere on MTV.

Cheers!
Frank
